    Words of Wisdom

“You are exactly where you need to be.”

Many years ago, while I was in graduate school, I found myself struggling with a significant decision: whether to take a break from my graduate program or continue after giving birth to our son. I felt paralyzed because either path carried meaningful consequences. I spent days weighing the pros and cons, revisiting the same questions, and trying to find certainty in a situation where certainty felt impossible.

Eventually, I sought counsel from one of my favorite professors. He listened attentively, acknowledged and validated my concerns, and then offered a simple response: “You are exactly where you need to be.”

Something about the timing and the way he delivered those words felt deeply reassuring. He wasn’t telling me what decision to make or dismissing the weight of what I was facing. Instead, he offered me a different perspective. He reminded me that I didn’t have to fight the uncertainty of that moment. I could allow myself to be where I was, trust the process, and move forward from there.

I have come to believe that much of the difficulty we experience in making decisions comes from our resistance to accepting our circumstances. We debate internally about what the right thing to do is, often searching for an answer that satisfies every expectation, eliminates every doubt, or protects us from judgment. I believe that, more often than not, we have an inner knowing about what is right for us. However, our own judgments, the perceived judgments of others, and the expectations we place on ourselves can make it difficult to trust that instinct.

When I accepted where I was, rather than keep resisting the uncertainty, my answer became clear. I decided to continue graduate school and find a wonderful daycare for our son. More importantly, I was able to trust my decision and follow through.

I chose these words as my personal words of wisdom because they have simplified my decision-making, and that has made all the difference. They remind me that I don’t always need to overthink, seek outside validation, or have every detail figured out before moving forward. Sometimes, I simply need to pause, accept where I am, quiet the outside noise, and trust myself.

Don’t get me wrong; I still occasionally struggle with decisions. But when I find myself caught in that familiar cycle of overthinking, I return to these words. They remind me that there is value in accepting the present moment, trusting my instincts, and having confidence in the path I choose.

You are exactly where you need to be.
